Slanted & Enchanted is a left-field classic, a record that came out of nowhere to help establish a new subgenre of rock & roll. Pavement had already sketched out their sound, as well as their amateurish lo-fi aesthetic, on a series of indie singles before recording their debut, but Slanted & Enchanted is where they pulled all of their disparate sounds together into a distinctive style. At first, the primitive sound of the record is the most gripping thing about Slanted, but soon the true innovations of the record appear through the songs themselves. Stephen Malkmus and Spiral Stairs subvert conventional pop structures, turning melodies inside out, reinterpreting and reworking older songs, and bending genres together. It’s a complex, enthralling record, filled with fractured riffs, strong melodies, and cryptic melodies, and with all the hiss and static, Slanted & Enchanted sounds like listening to a distant college radio station — melodies and hooks keep floating in and out of the mix, with individual lines instead of full lyrics surfacing through the murk. This unique song structure as much as the sound of the album itself makes Slanted & Enchanted an individual, signature work and one of the most influential records of the ’90s.

Avett Brothers – I and Love and You (2009)@320

There is no harmony like brotherly harmony. Something indelible in the weave of voices and play of sensibilities is stamped into the fraternal DNA and also stems from a lifetime of shared experiences. You can hear it in classic brother acts across the musical spectrum, from the Louvin Brothers to the Everly Brothers and on down the decades through the Wilson brothers (Beach Boys), the Davies brothers (Kinks), the Allman Brothers and even the Brothers Gibb (a.k.a., the Bee Gees). Whittling down the back catalog of one of the most popular and respected bands of the last quarter-century to a single-disc collection is bound to inspire argument and dissent from the fans and faithful over what is included–and all that gets left behind–and U2′s 26-year career is as celebrated and beloved as any band of their generation. U218 Singles doesn’t try to please everyone, wisely sticking to the acknowledged high points (and there are many) between 1983′s War and 2004′s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Nitpickers may quibble that the collection leans too heavily on the band’s most popular albums and skips the (admirable if less anthemic) techno-pop tangents of Zooropa and Pop and the earnest energy of the Boy/October years, but the musical majesty accumulated here testifies to the undeniable power and emotion U2 can muster in a four-minute pop song. Two new Rick Rubin-produced tracks don’t break new ground for the band, but both would fit snugly somewhere in the U2 canon–”Window in the Skies” is pure late-period arena rock with a typically towering falsetto chorus, while Green Day helps inject some October-era urgency into “The Saints Are Coming”. 2009 release, the third album from the Country favorite. Lambert, a two-time
Grammy nominee has seen both of her previous albums debut at #1 on the
Country Album Chart. Lambert wrote or co-wrote all but three of the 15 cuts
on the album and worked with a cross-section of writers including Blake Shelton,
Ashley Monroe, Natalie Hemby and Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley,
who lends background vocals on ‘Love Song.’ Of the three songs Lambert did not write,
she pulled from the best and her favorites – John Prine, Julie Miller, Allen Shamblin
and Tom Douglas to complete the album.

While Miranda LambertÂ’s first two albums spun tales of kerosene fires, bar
fights, and firearmed vengeance, Revolution finds the Texan taking some
degree of comfort in her relationship with Blake Shelton, whose influence
helps govern the albumÂ’s mellow moments. Lambert has never played by
anyoneÂ’s rules, be they dictated by Nashville or society in general, but she
has carved out her own set of principles over the course of a four-year
career. Accordingly, Revolution offers a strong, cohesive take on what has
quickly become the “Lambert sound:” a blend of lilting ballads and loud, fire-
breathing anthems, many of which owe as much to rock & roll as country.
She’s more comfortable with the slower songs this time around, and “Dead
Flowers” is perhaps her strongest vocal performance to date. Even so, the
harder numbers continue to pack the strongest punch. When Lambert howls
her way through “Maintain the Pain” — whose phaser-laden guitar
underscores a decision to “put a bullet in my radio” — she wields a double-
edged sword like a pro, courting the Nashville crowd while simultaneously
sending a kiss-off to those who deem her too dangerous.

Review:
I got this 10 cd set from a friend last christmas. This is truly a wonderful collection of works from very well known composers. The 10 cds cover a wide range of classical eras and styles, and they come in excellent packaging. Each disc is in its own seperate case, and all ten cases are put in a small yet sturdy cardboard box. The length of playing time on each disc varies from ~57 min to ~67 min, with most discs lasting longer than an hour. In addition, the inner flap of the cover case also provides a short yet informative biography of each composer. This disc set serves as a great way to begin for new classical music listeners. All the composers are well known and also new listeners of classical music may have even listened to a few pieces of the works.

While I frequently listen to classical music, there were some works by a few composers that I did not listen to (I also listen to pop, rock, french, russian, country, jazz…, so apparently Wagner and Verdi have eluded me). For example, I did not listen to Wagner’s works, and most of Verdi’s work were unknown to me. However, I listened to all of the cds and was quite pleased. The quality and performances on the discs are excellent, making this 10 cd set a definite steal considering its affordability. I also found that I really enjoy Verdi and Wagner’s works, and now I will begin to look into other works of these composers.

If you are new to classical music and wish to start listening and enjoying this type of music, then this is a great way to get a full flavor of this genre without investing too much money. However, please understand that classical music usually takes time to appreciate. Play the cds, and if you dont like a piece, dont disregard it at first. Play it in the background or listen to it everyday–the point is to constantly listen. Over time, you will find that you can now detect nuances and certain parts that you particularly enjoy, and you will probably begin to like that piece. However, if you are already well versed in classical music, still consider buying this set, as it is a great addition to any library, and the price is certainly not exorbitant.
