I’ve owned this game for over a decade and I was really disappointed to find out that my old disks wouldn’t work after I installed Windows Vista. The game itself works fine in Vista (even in 64bit, doesn’t even need to be run in compatibility mode as far as I’ve found) – the only problem is that the original installer doesn’t run in Vista.
I solved the problem for myself by getting Command & Conquer – The First Decade which includes all the C&C games from, well, the first decade (up to Generals!). That contains the classic Red Alert with a new installer that IS Vista compatible! Hurray! But what about for the people who want to play good old Red Alert without downloading 8gb of other games as well? The game is now freeware, but I think you’ll have the same problem with the freeware version (it’s the original release, which contains the old installer which isn’t Vista compatible).
Well here you go! This is Command & Conquer – Red Alert which I’ve installed and then compressed into a brand new installer that will work in Windows Vista. Also contains the two expansion packs preinstalled. And the best bit? You can still play it online! I’ve included Westwood Chat, which you’ll need, and also XWIS – a third party server set up so that people can still play the old Westwood games online!
